In the meantime let's start with the basics...

WHAT IS sym·bol·ism?

1. the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities.
2. symbolic meaning attributed to natural objects or facts.
3. an artistic and poetic movement or style using symbolic images and indirect suggestion to express mystical ideas, emotions, and states of mind.

Symbols are straightforward. They are letters, icons, maps, diagrams, universally understood images, and even punctuation marks! Whereas SYMBOLISM is the idea that things represent other things. What I mean by that is that we can look at something — let's say, the color red — and conclude that it represents not the color red itself but something beyond it: for example, passion, or love, or devotion. 

Here is an example of symbolism from a section of my art piece called "All Are Invited".

EXPLANATION: The swirl symbolizes chaos as it moves in a twisting, spiraling pattern. Blue represents water, and the sea is a symbol of chaos.

I think it's really important as an artist to keep experimenting and finding joy in what I do. My passion is to express the language of the heart and of the spirit and I invite you to listen to the whisperings 'within' as you ponder over each piece.
